4 Tips For Garage Door Maintenance

Blog

Garage doors offer protection and privacy, as well as increase the overall value of your property. Like any other piece of equipment in the home, garage doors require routine maintenance to ensure that they are in good working order. Here's how to keep your garage door working fine all year long.

1. Clean the Tracks

Garage door tracks can become dusty and dirty over time, leading to problems with the door opening and closing.

Here's how to clean your garage door tracks:

  • Open the garage door and locate the tracks on either side of the door.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt or debris from the tracks.
  • If there is any built-up grease or oil, use a degreaser to clean it up.
  • Close the garage door and check that it opens and closes smoothly.

2. Lubricate the Springs

Springs are the parts of a garage door that help it open and close, and they can become stiff and rusty if they aren't lubricated regularly. Lubricating the springs will help make opening and closing the garage door effortless.

Use a spray lubricant or a grease gun to apply oil to the springs. Be sure to apply lubricant evenly, making sure to get into all the corners.

3. Cut the Clutter

One way to ensure that your garage door operates smoothly and without issue is to keep the area around it clear of clutter. If there is too much stuff in the way, the door may not open and close properly. If there is too much obstruction, performing necessary maintenance may be more challenging.

Keep at least a few feet of space around the garage door. Remove any items that might be in the way of the door's path, such as bicycles or holiday decorations. By keeping your garage area tidy, you can ensure that your garage door functions properly all year long.

4. Check the Cables

Garage door cables help to lift and lower the door. One of the most common problems with cables is that they become loose over time.

This loosening happens because of normal wear and tear or someone trying to force the door open when it is stuck.

If your garage door isn't opening or closing correctly, or if you hear a loud noise when the door moves, one of your cables likely needs to be tightened or replaced.

If you're having difficulties opening or shutting your garage door, don't try to fix it yourself. Contact a garage door repair specialist for assistance. A specialist can identify the problem and make the necessary repairs quickly and efficiently.

repairing garage door damage from auto impacts

I thought the most difficult part of teaching my son how to drive would be out on the roads, but I didn't think about what he could do to my garage door before he even left the driveway. It took one small tap with the car to damage the garage door. Even though the garage door itself looked to be fine, the impact had caused some damage to the mechanical components, and we couldn't use the garage for a while. My blog explains what we had to do to make the repairs and will give you some tips for avoiding this type of accident around your home.
